1. Who can apply to the programme?

Accepted Answer

Students of all nationalities can apply for the programme. Nevertheless, students who have already obtained an EMJM scholarship from another programme are not eligible for a second EMJM scholarship.​​​​

2. I am not sure if I am eligible for the programme with the first degree that I have.  Can I get a pre-evaluation before applying?

Accepted Answer

We will only be able to evaluate your first degree within the official application process. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the programme, the selection committee will carefully check the individual educational profiles of each applicant for  BA or MA courses that are relevant for the programme and the discipline of their master's thesis preference.  For this reason, we will not be able to give you any feed-back on the eligibility of your first degree.

3. What happens if my first degree doesn't match exactly?

Accepted Answer

If your first degree shows less courses in Linguistics, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Educational Science, Sociology, Speech & Language Therapy or related subjects, you will get less than the max. score for the criterion of "matching educational background".  Subsequently, a lower score on this criterion will result in a reduced overall score, in the highly competitive field on scholarships.  Nevertheless, if you think the programme fits to your interests and motivation, you are very welcome to apply and we will be happy to check your application.

4. What characteristics or qualifications made the strongest scholarship candidates particularly competitive?

Accepted Answer

Overall, we expect applicants to provide all required application documents in time. We recommend to read the criteria diligently and relate the documents to them.The selection criteria include particulary two aspects that you can shape: professional work experience/internships: For this criterion, you could prepare for further practical experience which is relevant, and to provide convincing evidence for it. motivation letter: The motiviation letter should consist of a coherent, self-written personal statement setting out how your background and future aspirations relate to the programme. It should provide information on the your motivation, suitability and relevant experience for the study programme as well as a reasoned statement indicating which university and which subject you prefer for your Master’s thesis. All in all, strong candidates focus on the match of their qualifications, experience and motivation with the programme's selection criteria, from considerate programme choice to the composition of documents up to diligent handling of formal aspects. A high number of documents/certificates provided does not necessarily increase chances. It is quality over quantity.

5. Which English language proofs for the C1 level are accepted?

Accepted Answer

We accept documentation of advanced English language skills (spoken and written), minimum at C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), such as e.g. IELTS Academic: min. Band 7.0 TOEFL iBT: min. 95 pointsCambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)Applicants with a degree in a bachelor’s or master's programme taught in English need to present a confirmation letter issued by their university stating that the medium of instruction was English (MOI - mode of instruction letter). Applicants who have attended an English-language secondary school do not have to document their English language skills.

6. I am in my last semester of studies and will graduate after 15th January. Can I hand  in my graduation certificate after the deadline?

Accepted Answer

For your application, you need to submit  a completed BA degree. If you have accomplished all courses but don't hold your degree certficate yet, you can submit a statement letter of your university confirming that you have complied with all the  requirements for your degree. Furthermore, your transcript of records needs to include all grades (and your GPA) already. If you present these documents, you may hand in your degree certificate after the deadline, latest for enrollment in case you were accepted to the programme.

Question 7

7. I am still waiting for some documents (e.g. test result English language exam, graduation certificate, reference letter, reference letter for work experience, APS certificate). Can I hand it in after submitting my application / after 15th January?

Accepted Answer

We will need all application documents to be submitted during the application process until latest 15th January. Application files that are not complete cannot be considered. One exception is the degree certificate that can be handed in after 15th January in case the completion of all credits and a final transcript of records can be provided with the application.

8. If I have been rejected, can I get some feedback on my application to improve for the next time?

Accepted Answer

Due to the high number of applications, we cannot offer any feedback on individual applications. Since Erasmus Mundus scholarship applications are highly competitive, please be prepared that not everyone can get a scholarship. We recommend to search for programmes which have a better matching with your background to increase your chances.

Question 9

9. I have not been selected for the scholarship but received an offer as a self-paying student. How are my chances to get a scholarship if I am on the waiting list?

Accepted Answer

If a scholarship candidate withdraws, your chances do not only depend on your ranking score but on both the availability of places at the university that you have chosen for your master's thesis and the 10% limit on each nationality as stipulated by the EU. Thus, we are not able to indicate any prospects for your turn to get a scholarship. In case another scholarship becomes available, we will inform the next candidate according to the scheme mentioned above by e-mail. The scholarship waiting list will be closed approx. 3 months before the programme starts.

10. I hold a BA in English (or another) language or a BA in XX language teaching. Is this considered a related subject?

Accepted Answer

A BA in a language or language teaching is considered as a related subject. You are welcome to apply.
